Required Supplies
- White Vinegar
- Dish Soap
- Clean White Cloths
- Cold Water
The Logic Verdict
Stop rubbing. Rubbing wool felts the fibers and locks the stain in. Blotting is the only way.
The Science
Wool is porous. Red wine contains tannins. We need an acid (vinegar) to neutralize the tannin without using bleach (which destroys wool).
Step-by-Step Removal
- Blot Immediately: Use a dry white cloth to absorb excess liquid. Do not press hard.
- The Solution: Mix 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp white vinegar + 2 cups cold water.
- Apply: Sponge the solution onto the stain.
- Blot Again: Use a clean cloth to lift the stain.
- Rinse: Dab with plain cold water to remove soap residue.
What NOT To Do
- Do not use hot water (sets the stain).
- Do not use bleach.
- Do not scrub.
