Maytag Washer Error uL: Unbalanced Load (Suspension Rods)

uL means Unbalanced Load. If it happens constantly, your suspension rods are likely worn out.

The Logic Verdict

My Take: I watched the repair. If you get the uL code occasionally with heavy blankets, that’s normal—just redistribute the clothes. But if you get it on every load, your Suspension Rods are shot. These springs hold the tub in place, and when they wear out, the tub bounces like a pogo stick, triggering the error. Replacing all four rods is the standard fix.

What It Means

The uL code stands for Unbalanced Load. The machine detects that the tub is wobbling too violently to spin safely.

Common Causes

  1. Worn Suspension Rods: The springs or plastic bushings have failed (very common on Bravos/Cabrio models).
  2. True Imbalance: Washing a single heavy item like a rug or pillow.
  3. Leveling: The washer feet are not sitting flat on the floor.
  4. Loose Hub: The tub nut has backed off (less common).

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Secure the Lid: Tape the washer lid shut so it doesn’t swing open while you work.
  2. Release the Top Deck: Insert a putty knife between the top deck and the front panel (about 6 inches from the corners) to release the spring clips.
  3. Lift the Top: Slide the entire top deck forward slightly and hinge it back. Prop it up against a wall or chair. Be careful not to pull the wires or hoses too tight.
  4. Support the Tub: Place a block of wood or a thick book under the tub to lift it slightly. This takes the weight off the suspension rods, making them easier to remove.
  5. Remove the Old Rods: Work on one corner at a time.
    • Lift the rod up to relieve tension.
    • Rotate the plastic cup/ball at the top to align with the slot in the frame.
    • Drop the rod down and unhook it from the tub.
  6. Install New Rods:
    • Hook the new rod into the tub bracket.
    • Pull it up through the frame slot.
    • Rotate the cup to lock it in place.
    • Note: You may need to use pliers or muscle to pull the new spring up against the tension.
  7. Repeat: Replace all four rods.
  8. Reassemble: Remove the support block, lower the top deck, and snap it back into place.
