Maytag Washer Error OL: Overload or Motor Drag

OL indicates the motor is struggling to turn the drum, caused by overload, obstructions, or a bad sensor.

The Logic Verdict

My Take: I reviewed the repair guide. The OL code means the motor is working too hard. Before replacing parts, ensure you aren’t just overloading the machine. If it happens on small loads, the culprit is usually mechanical drag (like a sock stuck between the tubs) or a failing Rotor Position Sensor (RPS) that is misreading the motor’s movement.

What It Means

The OL code stands for Over Load. The control board detects excessive friction or resistance when trying to spin the basket.

Common Causes

  1. True Overload: Too many heavy items (wet towels, jeans) in one load.
  2. Tub Obstruction: A sock, coin, or wire stuck between the inner spin basket and the outer tub.
  3. Faulty RPS Sensor: The sensor on the motor is failing.
  4. Seized Bearings: The main tub bearings are rusted and creating drag (usually accompanied by a loud roaring noise).

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Lighten the Load: Remove half the laundry and restart. If the error clears, it was just too heavy.
  2. Access the Motor: If the error persists, unplug the washer. Tape the lid shut. Tilt the washer back and prop it up securely against a wall or on wood blocks.
  3. Remove the Rotor: Locate the large plastic rotor (flywheel) underneath. Remove the center bolt (usually a 1/4” hex or Allen key). Pull the rotor straight off.
  4. Check for Drag: With the rotor removed, spin the tub shaft by hand. It should turn smoothly. If it feels gritty or stuck, you likely have an obstruction between the tubs or bad bearings.
  5. Inspect the Stator: If the shaft spins freely, the issue is likely the sensor. Remove the four 3/8” bolts holding the stator (the coil assembly) and lower it down.
  6. Replace the RPS: The Rotor Position Sensor is a white plastic component snapped onto the stator coils. Unclip the wire harness, release the locking tabs, and replace the sensor.
  7. Reassemble: Reinstall the stator and rotor. Crucial: Apply blue threadlocker to the rotor bolt to prevent it from backing out.
