LG Fridge Error Er IF: Ice Fan Frozen

Er IF / F1 means the ice-room fan can’t move—melt the frost, fix the air leaks, and replace the fan grille if needed.

The Logic Verdict

LG’s support rep ties IF/F1 errors directly to the ice maker fan. When frost packs the duct, the fan stalls and the fridge quits making ice. In the video she disconnects power, opens both doors, and lets the cabinet thaw for eight hours with towels catching the melt water. Once the ice is gone and the fan can spin freely again, the code clears without parts—provided you correct the air leaks that caused the frost in the first place.

What It Means

Er IF / IF E / F1 means the control didn’t detect airflow from the ice-room blower. The fan that pushes freezer air into the door-mounted ice bin is either frozen in place or electrically failed, so the refrigerator halts ice production to protect the motor.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Try a soft reset. Unplug the refrigerator (or flip the breaker) for two minutes, then power back up. If Er IF flashes again, continue below.
  2. Manually defrost the ice room. Unplug the fridge, remove food and the ice bin, prop every door open, and leave towels down for at least eight hours so the fan cavity can thaw completely.
  3. Dry and restart. Wipe away leftover moisture, close the doors, plug the unit back in, and allow 24–48 hours for temps and ice-making to normalize.
  4. Eliminate air leaks. Level the cabinet, inspect the mullion gasket for tears, and make sure nothing blocks the vents the video highlights.
  5. Replace the ice fan assembly if needed. If the code comes back even with clear ducts and tight gaskets, pull the freezer drawer, remove the ice-room cover, and install a new fan grille/motor kit.
  6. Schedule service if the fan never energizes. A damaged main PCB or wiring harness can also trigger IF errors and should be checked by a pro.
