What It Means
The 6-1 error code (indicated by the Clean light flashing 6 times, pausing, then flashing 1 time) means the dishwasher has detected that it is not filling with water, or not filling fast enough. The control board sets a timer for the fill cycle; if the water level switch doesn’t trip within that time, it throws this error.
Common Causes
- Water Supply Valve Closed: The most common “oops” moment. If the valve under the sink was bumped or turned off, the machine gets no water.
- Kinked Supply Hose: If the dishwasher was recently installed or moved, the flexible water line might be pinched between the machine and the wall/cabinet.
- Clogged Inlet Screen: The water inlet valve has a small mesh screen to catch sediment. If your pipes are old, this screen can get plugged.
- Failed Water Inlet Valve: If the water supply is perfect but the machine stays dry, the solenoid on the valve itself has likely failed.
How to Fix It
1. Check the Water Supply
- Locate the shut-off valve under your kitchen sink (usually connected to the hot water line).
- Ensure it is turned fully counter-clockwise (open).
- If it’s a new installation, make sure the water was actually turned on!
2. Inspect the Hose
- If you can, pull the dishwasher out a few inches.
- Check the braided metal or copper supply line. Is it crushed or kinked?
- This often happens if the machine is pushed back too aggressively against the back wall.
3. Clean the Inlet Screen
- Turn off the water and power to the dishwasher.
- Remove the kickplate at the bottom.
- Disconnect the water supply line from the inlet valve (have a towel ready).
- Look inside the valve’s port. Is the small plastic screen covered in gunk?
- Clean it carefully with a toothbrush or needle-nose pliers.
4. Replace the Water Inlet Valve
If you have good water pressure to the machine, no kinks, and a clean screen, but the dishwasher still won’t fill, the Water Inlet Valve is the culprit. It’s an electrical part that opens to let water in; when it dies, it stays shut.
