Kenmore Washer Error Code UE: Unbalanced Load (The Loose Rotor Bolt Fix)

The UE error usually means an unbalanced load, but if it keeps happening, check the rotor bolt underneath. It's a common, free fix.

Kenmore Washer Error Code UE

The UE error code stands for Unbalanced Error. It means the washer drum is wobbling too much during the spin cycle.

Usually, this just means you’re washing a single heavy item (like a rug) or all the clothes got stuck on one side. But if this happens on every load, even small ones, you have a mechanical issue.

The Human Verdict

It's not always the suspension rods.

Most people (and manuals) will tell you to replace the four suspension rods that hold the tub up. While those do fail, there is a "hidden" cause that costs $0 to fix: a loose rotor bolt.

On Kenmore/LG top loaders, the large bolt holding the motor to the bottom of the tub can vibrate loose over time. This creates "play" or wobble that the sensor detects as an unbalanced load, no matter how perfectly you arrange the clothes.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. The “Bounce Test” (Check Suspension First)

Before you tip the machine over, check the suspension rods.

  1. Open the lid.
  2. Push the tub down hard and let go.
  3. Result:
    • Good: It should pop up and stop immediately (maybe one small bounce).
    • Bad: If it bounces up and down like a pogo stick multiple times, your Suspension Rods are shot and need replacing.

2. The Loose Rotor Bolt Fix (The “Secret” Fix)

If your suspension feels fine but you still get the UE error, do this:

  1. Empty & Unplug: Take all clothes out and unplug the washer.
  2. Tip it Back: Have a helper lean the washer back against a wall so you can access the bottom. (Secure it so it doesn’t fall!).
  3. Locate the Rotor: You’ll see the large plastic/metal motor assembly (the rotor) right in the center.
  4. Check the Bolt: There is a single large bolt in the dead center.
    • Grab the rotor and wiggle it. If it feels loose or “clunky,” the bolt is loose.
  5. Tighten It: Use a socket (usually 17mm) or a large adjustable wrench to tighten this bolt firmly.
    • Pro Tip: If you have Blue Thread Locker, back the bolt out, apply a drop, and retighten it. This ensures it won’t happen again.

3. Reset & Test

  1. Set the washer back down.
  2. Plug it in.
  3. Run a “Rinse & Spin” cycle to verify the error is gone.
