The Human Verdict: It’s The Control Board

The F01 error code is a classic sign that the main electronic control board has failed. Specifically, a relay on the board often burns out or a solder joint cracks, breaking the circuit.

I watched the repair video where the user actually solders a jumper wire to bypass a burnt trace on the board. While that’s an impressive DIY hack, for most people, the reliable fix is simply replacing the board. It’s an easy repair that only takes about 15 minutes and a screwdriver.

What It Means

The F01 code indicates a primary control failure. The machine’s “brain” is unable to operate the motor or heater relays correctly.

Common Causes

  1. Failed Control Board: The most common cause. A relay or solder joint on the board has failed.
  2. Power Surge: A surge can damage the sensitive electronics.
  3. Loose Connections: Rarely, a loose wire harness can cause this, but it’s usually the board itself.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Safety First

Unplug the dryer. You will be working with electrical components, so this is non-negotiable.

2. Remove the Top Panel

On most Kenmore Elite/HE series dryers:

  1. Pull the dryer forward to access the back.
  2. Remove the two 1/4” hex head screws securing the top panel to the back of the unit.
  3. Slide the top panel back about an inch, then lift it off.

3. Locate and Remove the Board

The control board is usually mounted on the left-hand side wall (looking from the front).

  1. Take a Picture: Before disconnecting anything, snap a clear photo of the wire connections.
  2. Disconnect Wires: Unplug the wire harnesses. They are keyed, so they only fit one way, but the photo is your backup.
  3. Remove Board: Remove the mounting screw(s) or release the plastic locking tabs to free the board.

4. Install the New Board

  1. Snap the new board into place.
  2. Reconnect the wire harnesses, using your photo as a guide.
  3. Reinstall the top panel and the two rear screws.
  4. Plug the dryer back in and test.
