Human Verdict

I see the F7 code most often after a heavy cleaning session—liquid gets behind the overlay and shorts the ribbon cable contacts. Before you spend $200+ on a new control panel, you absolutely must try cleaning the ribbon cable contacts with a pencil eraser. It fixes the issue about 50% of the time. If the overlay is peeling or bubbling, however, moisture has likely permanently damaged the membrane layers.

What It Means

F7 = Shorted Key. The computer thinks a button is being pressed down continuously. This is almost always a physical failure of the touch membrane (the sticker with the buttons) or the ribbon cable connecting it to the clock.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug: Disconnect power.
  2. Access: Remove the back panel of the console.
  3. Reseat Ribbon: Find the flat ribbon cable connecting the touch panel to the board. Unplug it. Clean the contacts with a pencil eraser (gently). Plug it back in.
  4. Peel Test: Sometimes the plastic overlay is peeling and pressing on a button. Press it flat.
  5. Replace: If it persists, the membrane switch is dead.
