The Logic Verdict
I watched Mark from Brand Source Service walk through an Electrolux/Frigidaire dryer that kept flashing E64. His heater coil still passed an ohms test, but once he pulled the entire assembly out you could see the back side had collapsed into the can from overheating. Start exactly where he did: remove the heater so you can inspect both sides instead of trusting the continuity reading alone.
What It Means
E64 trips when the control senses a heater circuit failure. In the video that failure was purely mechanical—the coil warped and grounded against the housing even though electrical resistance looked normal. If you never remove the element, you will miss that damage and keep resetting a code that immediately returns.
Common Causes
- Heater coil overheated and collapsed into the metal housing, shorting the circuit just like Mark shows.
- The winding still measures within spec, so relying on the ohm test alone leaves the bad heater in place and the E64 comes right back.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Disconnect power and pull the dryer out. You need room to work, so unplug the cord (or kill the breaker) before you remove panels.
- Remove the heater assembly for a bench inspection. Mark takes out the entire heater box so both the front and back plates are visible—undo the wiring connectors, back panel screws, and slide the housing free.
- Inspect the coil, not just the meter reading. Lay the heater flat and check whether the coil has collapsed against the sides. Even if your multimeter still shows continuity, any spot where the coil touches metal means the element is cooked.
- Install a new OEM heater and reset the code. Swap in the replacement assembly, reconnect the wires, reassemble the dryer, then enter service mode to clear the stored E64 fault.
